As part of the 14th EASN International Conference in Thessaloniki this year, we were delighted to introduce a novel format aimed at fostering deeper discussions on pressing topics in the aviation sector. For the first time, the program featured two Panel Discussions, bringing together leading experts to share their insights, ideas, and visions for the future of aviation. This dynamic format provided a platform for interactive dialogue and exchange of knowledge among prominent figures in the field, with an emphasis on addressing contemporary challenges and opportunities.

The preparations for the 16th EASN International Conference on "Innovation in Aviation & Space towards sustainability today and tomorrow" are already underway, setting the stage for an insightful and impactful event for the aerospace community. The event is co-organized by the EASN Association and the Institut Supérieur de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace (ISAE-SUPAERO). 

The 14th EASN International Conference, held last October in the lively city of Thessaloniki, Greece, was a resounding success, bringing together experts, researchers, and professionals from more than 39 countries to share their knowledge on the future of aviation and space.

The EASN Association has released a position paper with regards to the central role of academia in the innovation ecosystem, on which the current transformation of the aerospace sector strongly depends on. As the primary engines of fundamental research and education of future pioneers, universities are the backbone in enabling future breakthroughs.

As part of the 14th EASN International Conference, a new and exciting initiative was introduced: the Poster Section & Competition, aimed at spotlighting innovative research contributions in the fields of aviation and space. With over 50 posters submitted, participants showcased their cutting-edge work in a broad spectrum of thematic areas. The evaluation process followed a peer-review methodology, ensuring a fair and thorough assessment by fellow experts.

The 14th EASN International Conference on "Innovation in Aviation & Space towards sustainability today & tomorrow", will be held from October 8th to 11th, 2024, in Greece. The EASN Association and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki are excited to welcome all delegates in the lively city of Thessaloniki.

At the 14th EASN International Conference in Thessaloniki, Greece, a significant milestone was reached with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the European Aeronautics Science Network (EASN) association and the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS).

The EASN Association has released a position paper reflecting on next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) that takes place in a context of increasing geopolitical tensions and intensifying global competition in the space sector. While this position paper focuses on the upcoming MFF, it is also closely linked to the preparation of Framework Programme 10 (FP10), which will remain the main instrument supporting collaborative research and innovation in Europe.

The preparations for the 15th EASN Conference, taking place in Madrid on 14-17 October 2025, are well underway. This highly anticipated event, co-organized by the EASN Association and the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Aeronáutica y del Espacio (ETSIAE) of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), promises to be a milestone gathering for the aerospace community.

On the occasion of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the European Commission and SPACE AISBL for the co-programmed European Partnership for Globally Competitive Space Systems (“Space Partnership”) in the context of Horizon Europe, an important effort is in progress for upgrading and restructuring the space pillar within the EASN Association.

The European Union is currently setting the course for the next Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10), which will begin in 2028. We acknowledge the Commission’s efforts to simplify and streamline processes. However, we would like to take this opportunity to share our thoughts on some aspects we consider to be particularly important.

The Aviation Research & Innovation Strategy (ARIS) was handed over to the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, during a high-level event at the Paris Air Show on 16 June 2025. 

The EASN Stakeholders Advisory Board (SAB) meeting took place on March 7^th in Brussels. After a 6-years term in a rapidly evolving environment of the aviation sector, two prestigious members of the board decided to step back and provide room to other colleagues from the stakeholders’ ecosystem to bring their knowledge and experience in this high-level body of the EASN Association.

The Conference Proceedings Volume of the "14th EASN Conference on Innovation in Aviation & Space towards sustainability today and tomorrow" is now available. In addition to the proceedings, the publication of the conference's Special Issue in the Aerospace Journal is underway, focusing on selected papers from the conference. Both the Conference Proceedings and the Special Issue provide open-access resources for researchers, professionals, and academics in the aerospace industry.

The EASN Association is launching a Call for Tenders amongst its society members for the co-organization of the 15th EASN International Conference, which is planned to take place in Fall 2025. 

The challenging objective of the European Green Deal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 requires a coordinated involvement and cooperation of all stakeholders in the air transport system. The Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research and Innovation in Europe (ACARE) contributes to this objective by assembling all these stakeholders, providing an open forum for discussion and developing a common vision for aviation, such as the recently published “Fly the Green Deal – Europe’s Vision for Sustainable Aviation”.

The EASN Association has released a position paper with the aim to contribute to the open discussion concerning the Framework Programme 10. This position paper underlines the need for a sufficiently funded Aviation programme therein, addressing all significant challenges for the Aviation sector and being a suitable frame for both, integration and demonstration of innovation in the near and short term as well as exploration and maturation of breakthrough technologies to feed the pipeline of innovation and ensure Impact also beyond 2035.

On October 7th, 2024, the EASN Stakeholders Advisory Board (SAB) convened for a key meeting that included important decisions regarding leadership and the future of the Board. After a unanimous proposal from the EASN Board of Directors, EASN Chairman Andreas Strohmayer formally requested the 3-year term renewal of the SAB, which is composed of distinguished industry and academic experts from the aerospace community.

We are thrilled to announce that the European Aerospace Science Network (EASN) and SINTEF are joining forces to host a high-level, two-day workshop in the heart of Norway.

The 15th EASN International Conference, which was held last October in the cultural city of Madrid, Spain, was a great success, gathering experts, researchers, and professionals from more than 35 countries to share their knowledge on the future of aviation and space.

One of the permanent objectives of the EASN Association is the dissemination of knowledge and technological innovation, such as for example project results achieved in the context of funded aerospace research. To further support this objective, a new dissemination tool will be soon introduced, entitled “EASN Research Webinars”. 

The European Aerospace Science Network (EASN) is entering a new era with the election of its new Board of Directors. The transition was formalized during the 15th EASN International Conference, held in Madrid. This milestone marks not only a leadership renewal but also a commitment to reinforcing Europe’s position within the global aerospace ecosystem.

With the aim of clustering the stakeholders of the European space sector, five (5) associations representing the key players of the space ecosystem formed an umbrella association entitled “Space Partnership Association for the Competitiveness of Europe (S.P.A.C.E) AISBL”. The S.P.A.C.E AISBL is consisted of ASD Eurospace, ESRE, EARTO, SME4SPACE and EASN Association. 

In March 2026, the Dresden University of Technology will place a new flying test bed for climate-friendly propulsion into operation. The Diamond DA62 MPP (Multi-Purpose Platform) enables in-flight validation of combustion, fuel cell, and electric propulsion systems under realistic boundary conditions.

On 6th June, the European Aerospace Science Network (EASN) and the Joint European Drone Associations (JEDA) formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster scientific, technological, and organizational cooperation in the field of aviation. This collaboration aims to create a platform for efficient exchange of knowledge and expertise, by broading networks and strengthening relationships between the members. 

The EASN Association is proud to support AERODAYS 2025, Europe’s flagship event in aviation and aerospace research, which will take place from May 7 to 9, 2025, in the vibrant city of Warsaw, Poland.

The EASN Research Webinars officially launched on the 7th of March 2024. The newly introduced dissemination tool of the EASN Association, taking place on a bi-weekly basis, gives the opportunity to the members and followers of the network to attend top notch research activities of the aviation and space ecosystem and interact with the speakers. The webinars are free of charge and addressed to the whole aviation & space community.

In the frame of the 14th EASN International Conference, set to unfold in Thessaloniki, Greece, this year, the formal gathering of the “Interest Group on ‘Space Technologies and Applications’” will take place on October 11.

From 4–12 July 2026, the Technical University of Crete (TUC) with the support of EASN welcomes students and young professionals to Chania for the annual TUC Space Summer School. It is an intensive program designed for students and young professionals ready to deepen their expertise in the space sector.

This November, the European Aerospace Science Network Association (EASN) and the Airport Regions Conference (ARC) have reaffirmed their cooperation with the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aiming at pursuing joint activities for the development and promotion of mutually beneficial scientific, technological, and organizational advancements in aviation and air transport, particularly in the field of airport operations.

EASN supports this year the 8th International Conference of Engineering Against Failure (ICEAF VIII), which is jointly organized by the Laboratory of Technology & Strength of Materials of the Mechanical Engineering & Aeronautics Department of the University of Patras, and the SINTEF Research Organization. 

The Clean Aviation Programme has announced the 3rd Call for Proposals, set to launch in February 2025, with up to €380 million in EU funding available for disruptive projects aimed at decarbonising aviation.
