14th EASN International Conference | 8-11 October, 2024 | Thessaloniki, Greece

The 14th EASN International Conference on "Innovation in Aviation & Space towards sustainability today & tomorrow", will be held from October 8th to 11th, 2024, in Greece. The EASN Association and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki are excited to welcome all delegates in the lively city of Thessaloniki, at the renowned Concert Hall.

The event will be performed with the kind support of the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA)Clean Aviation JUSESAR JU, the Association of the European Space Research Establishments (ESRE)FRAUNHOFERHellenic Aerospace Industry, and si-cluster.

In response to the invaluable feedback from its predecessors, the 14th EASN International Conference on "Innovation in Aviation & Space towards sustainability today & tomorrow" is introducing two high-level discussion panels into the plenary sessions, while retaining the impactful keynote presentations. This dynamic format aims to boost engagement and spotlights distinguished representatives from key stakeholders in the European aviation and space community, fostering enriched and interactive exchanges. The plenary sessions (the speakers are presented in alphabetical order) are the following: 

 

Discussion Panel: Sustainability in air transport system
Moderated by Prof. Ola Issakson, Chair Professor in Systems Engineering and Engineering Design at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.

  • Mr. Andreas Boschen, Executive Director of SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking.
  • Mr. Axel Krein, Executive Director of Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking.
  • Prof. Dimitri Mavris, President of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS) and the Boeing Chaired Professor of Advanced Aerospace Systems Analysis in Georgia Tech’s School of Aerospace Engineering.
  • Dr. Björn Nagel, Director of the Institute of System Architectures in Aeronautics in the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
  • Prof. Spiros Pantelakis, Honorary Chairman of the European Aeronautics Science Network (EASN), Professor Emeritus, University of Patras.

Moderated by Dr. Jean-Francois Brouckaert, Head of Technology Office at Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking.

  • Innovation and Clean Energy, the key to success for sustainable aviation by Ms. Marylin Bastin, Director of the European Green Sky Directorate in EUROCONTROL.
  • Technologies of Very Low Altitude Satellites – Contribution to a Sustainable Space Utilization by Prof. Stefanos Fasoulas, Professor for Space Transportation Technology, Managing Director Institute of Space Systems, Dean of Faculty Aerospace Engineering and Geodesy, University of Stuttgart.
  • AI-based robotics – a key technology for space applications by Prof. Frank Kirchner, Professor at the University of Bremen, Executive Director DFKI Bremen (German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence).
  • Adaptive Structures Concepts for Quiet Supersonic Civil Transport Vehicles by Prof. Dimitris Lagoudas, Department of Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M University, USA.

Furthermore, a few selected highlights of the upcoming gathering are the following:

  • Seven clustered sessions organized and supported by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) in collaboration with projects from Clean Aviation, are currently in preparation. These sessions will delve into key topics including Hydrogen in Aviation, SAF Challenges, Local Air Quality, H2-air Combustion & SOFC, and Digitalization of Manufacturing. Each session will feature presentations highlighting the progress and accomplishments of ongoing research activities, as well as open discussion panels.
  • A variety of Technical Sessions & Workshops on emerging scientific and technological topics. Amongst them: 
    • A series of sessions under the overarching topic “Sustainable and Circular Aircraft Development and Production”. 
    • An extended showcase of the EcoDesign programme with 3 streams dealing with Sustainable engineering, Life Cycle Assessment and ecoDesign in Clean Aviation.
    • Interactive workshops dealing with design for sustainability & holistic digital modeling along the aerospace product life cycle.
    • A number of thematics on space related matters.
  • Dedicated EU funded project sessions, showcasing the research achievements and future trends and opportunities.

In this context, all prospective authors are cordially invited to submit their abstracts for presentation at the 14th EASN International Conference on the dedicated submission platform by May 31st, 2024.

We also encourage the participants to exploit the early bird fees, available until July 31st, and register online at their earliest convenience in order to secure their seat in this “not to miss” gathering of the aviation and space community.
