New end-to-end digital framework for optimized manufacturing and maintenance of next generation aircraft composite structures

GENEX Project at the 14th EASN International Conference 2024! 

The GENEX project was featured at the prestigious 14th EASN - European Aeronautics Science Network International Conference in Thessaloniki, October 8-11. IRES and ITA - Instituto Tecnológico de Aragón, key beneficiaries of the GENEX project, presented their cutting-edge advancements in the field of aerospace technology, showcasing the impact of their research on the future of aviation.
The paper and presentation, titled "AI-Powered Structural Health Monitoring: Predicting Fatigue Damage in Aircraft Composites with Ultrasonic Guided Wave Inspections," highlighted how AI is revolutionizing the monitoring of aircraft structures. The session was presented by Panagiotis Kolozis (IRES), alongside Dimitris Karasavvas, José Manuel Royo, Javier Hernández Oliván, Vanessa Thalassinou-Lislevand, Andrea Calvo-Echenique, PhD, and Elias Koumoulos (IRES). This presentation offered deep insights into the future of structural health monitoring, using AI and ultrasonic guided wave inspections to predict and prevent fatigue damage in aircraft composites.

Jens Kosmann from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) presented his work on a visual assistance system for manual composite scarf repair, a crucial component in the future of digital and automated composite fabrication. This innovative research, conducted as part of the HORIZON EUROPE Projects, aims to enhance the precision and efficiency of composite repairs, ultimately driving advancements in aircraft manufacturing and maintenance. GENEX Project at MRO Europe 2024! 

GENEX was featured at MRO Europe 2024, Europe’s largest event for the aviation sector, which took place from October 22-24 in Barcelona, Spain. With over 10,000 attendees and more than 450 exhibitors, it’s the ideal platform to explore the latest innovations in aviation. The GMI AERO team, a beneficiary of the GENEX project, showcased its cutting-edge solutions at booth #2191E in the French Pavilion.

The Composites Repair Seminar and Experts Forum for MRO 2024 was a resounding success, proving the power of collaboration between Singapore Institute of Aerospace Engineers (SIAE), C. Melchers GmbH & Co., Republic Polytechnic, and GMI AERO. This inspiring event brought together leaders from the aerospace industry to discuss the latest innovations and best practices in composite repair technologies.  

A special shout-out to Andrea Calvo-Echenique, PhD, GENEX project coordinator, for her exceptional remote presentation. She shared crucial updates and advancements from the GENEX project, offering deep insights into the future of composite repairs in aerospace. GENEX Advisory Board Meeting

On November 26th, the GENEX consortium convened for its Advisory Board Meeting at the state-of-the-art Lufthansa Technical Training GmbH facilities. This pivotal event brought together key players, including GMI AERO, German Aerospace Center (DLR), AIMEN Centro Tecnológico, Ziegler Aerospace, Aernnova Aerospace, and ITA · Instituto Tecnológico de Aragón, to review progress, align on project goals, and define the next steps. Collaborative initiatives like these exemplify the power of teamwork in driving innovation for the future of aviation.
