iodine Fed Advanced Cusp field Thruster for Mid-Power

The iFACT-MP project, which stands for iodine-fed advanced Cusp field Thruster for Mid-Power, commenced in January 2024. This 24-month initiative, funded by HADEA, aims to strengthen Europe’s leading role in iodine electric propulsion (EP). Its main goal is to develop a thruster subsystem that utilizes iodine fuel within the 3-5 kW power range, while also addressing all essential components necessary for the successful implementation of an iodine EP subsystem.

The IFACT-MP project has been highly active this season, stepping up dissemination, community engagement, and technical exchange across Europe. Highlights include a string of targeted social posts and event participations showcasing research progress, successful demonstrations, and stakeholder outreach designed to accelerate uptake of our innovations.

The project consortium convened at Fraunhofer IKTS in the historic city of Dresden for its final review meeting, an important milestone that marked the culmination of years of collaborative effort, innovation, and technical achievement. Dresden, renowned for its baroque architecture, cultural heritage, and strong scientific legacy, provided an inspiring setting for partners to reflect on the project’s journey, assess results, and envision the path beyond its formal completion.

The first day opened with a warm welcome from the hosting institution, followed by a guided tour of Fraunhofer IKTS laboratories. Participants explored the institute’s state-of-the-art facilities, gaining insight into the technological developments achieved throughout the project. Fraunhofer IKTS offered a unique environment where cutting-edge research meets local culture, with artworks from regional artists creating an atmosphere that blends innovation with creativity. The active presence of the Project Officer, Mr. Athanasios Petridis, and the external reviewer, Mr. Carsten Scharleman, facilitated valuable feedback and constructive discussion, ensuring alignment with expectations. The day concluded with a joint dinner, celebrating the collaboration and strengthening professional relationships built throughout the project.

The second day focused on detailed presentations and discussions, highlighting the innovations, lessons learned, and technological progress achieved across the consortium. Partners shared insights into the maturity of the developed solutions and the practical applications of their work. The final sessions included a thorough assessment of results and a forward-looking discussion, reaffirming the consortium’s commitment to delivering high-quality, innovative, and reliable technological solutions. The meeting closed on a positive note, underscoring the strength of European collaboration and the shared dedication to advancing science and engineering in the project’s field.
