HERA’s Annual Review Meeting

The Clean Aviation HERA project has made significant strides in achieving its objectives and milestones, showcasing strong progress and alignment with its long-term vision. The M24 Review Meeting, held on April 1–2, 2025, at the University “Federico II” in Naples, brought together representatives from CAJU, EASA, external experts, and all 52 project partners, reflecting the collaborative strength behind this ambitious initiative.

The review focused on evaluating technical progress, the effectiveness of corrective actions, and the alignment of technology development with the target Entry Into Service (EIS) in 2035. The discussions were open and constructive, supported by comprehensive documentation and well-prepared presentations.

HERA stands out as a complex and highly integrated project, uniting 38 beneficiaries and multiple partners across the aviation sector. Its mission is to develop hybrid-electric aircraft concepts for regional aviation, targeting significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

A major highlight of the review was the introduction of a new Ultra Efficient Regional Aircraft (UERA) use case, aimed at achieving a 30% CO₂ reduction with EIS in 2035. This concept, led by Leonardo with demonstrator support from ATR, is now a top priority. A second concept, the Ultra Clean Business (UCB) aircraft, targeting a 50% CO₂ reduction with EIS beyond 2035, is also under development by Airbus Defence and Space (ADS).

The updated action plan, presented during the review, includes a clear roadmap with revised GANTT charts, risk assessments, and key performance indicators. These updates were formalized in a Grant Agreement amendment signed in March 2025.

HERA continues to demonstrate high impact potential in the aviation sector, with its hybrid-electric aircraft concepts poised to redefine regional air travel. The project’s alignment with Clean Aviation’s strategic goals and its commitment to innovation and sustainability were strongly reaffirmed during the review.
