CLAIM (Clean Aviation Support for Impact Monitoring) is an ambitious initiative inaugurated in January 2024, funded by the EU under the Clean Aviation programme. The project is dedicated to advancing the understanding of aviation's impact on climate change, focusing on both CO2 and non-CO2 emissions. It’s high-level objectives include the development of tangible metrics for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the compilation of an inventory of cutting-edge aeronautical research and technologies.

The main milestone achieved for CLAIM is the International Workshop on Climate Metrics and Impact Assessment of Aviation, which took place on June 17-18, 2024, in Hamburg, Germany. Hosted and coordinated by the DLR Institute of System Architectures in Aeronautics, the workshop focused on both CO2 & non-CO2 emissions and brought together leading experts from academia, research, and the industry.
The workshop aimed to foster discussions on suitable climate metrics, potential new technologies, and the challenges associated with impact assessment in aviation. This event provided a platform for participants to exchange ideas and prioritize the development of robust climate metrics to better assess aviation's impact. It also enabled the discussion of synergies with related projects such as ACACIA and IMPACT MONITOR.

1st Day Highlights

• Executives from Clean Aviation and the European Commission DG-RTD emphasized the importance of developing common understanding and synergies for climate metrics at both EU and global levels.
• EASA representative discussed the agency's recent non-CO2 project and welcomed the cooperation with the CLAIM consortium.
• Workshop leads from the DLR Institute of Atmospheric Physics provided insights into candidate metrics and the current state of research.
• Presentations by experts from DLR Institute of Atmospheric Physics, IPSL-Institut Pierre-Simon Laplace, Delft University of Technology, and DLR Institute of Air Transport highlighted the complexities and trade-offs in assessing aviation's climate impact.

2nd Day Highlights

• Clean Aviation’s Head of Unit held an insightful talk on the need for climate assessment, followed by a first interactive session in which four working groups discussed and prioritized the requirements for climate metrics.
• The discussion continued in three parallel and alternating streams: 
  Stream 1 – Evaluation of Climate Metrics
  Stream 2 – Gap Analysis of Climate Metrics
  Stream 3 – Climate Metrics and Technology Impact

A white paper detailing the outcomes and recommendations from the workshop will be published later this year.
