Redefining Aircraft Propulsion: The exFan Initiative

Understanding exFan

The exFan project, formally known as "Novel Recuperation System to Maximize Exergy from Anergy for Fuel Cell Powered Geared Electric Aircraft Propulsion System,” is a 4-year project research funded by EU. Launched in December 2023, the project’s mission is to enhance aircraft engine performance using innovative recuperation systems. The project is led by CIDETEC Surface Engineering, alongside nine (9) other partners from five (5) countries: ADT, TUW, Fraunhofer IAPT, DLR, PowerID, EASN-TIS, IRES, FZG/TUM, and Egile Mechanics.

Recent Developments

In the last six months, the exFan team has made notable progress in developing an environment model and a preliminary sizing tool for the heat propulsor. These tools are critical for addressing the complex challenges associated with optimizing aircraft propulsion systems.

Continuing the journey, the exFan General Assembly met on June 5-6, 2024, at CIDETEC in San Sebastian, Spain. The meeting brought together all 10 partners from the aerospace industry, academia, and aeronautical associations.
