Novel recuperation system to maximize exergy from anergy for fuel cell powered geared electric aircraft propulsion system

exFan on the Move: Connecting, Collaborating and Looking Ahead

Recent months have provided valuable opportunities for the EXFAN project to strengthen scientific exchange, assess technical progress and engage with the wider European aviation research community.

The Vienna Aviation Days 2026, organized by the exFan project and powered by ADT, brought together representatives from academia, research organisations, industry and policymakers to exchange knowledge on key developments shaping sustainable aviation. Discussions addressed sustainable propulsion systems, airport electrification and infrastructure, battery technologies, additive manufacturing, hydrogen and hybrid-electric aviation, future airspace concepts, and European research and innovation initiatives. The event provided an interdisciplinary forum for discussing technological challenges and strengthening collaboration across the aviation research ecosystem. You may check the official press release providing more insights about the event.

Following the Vienna Aviation Days, the exFan consortium gathered in Vienna on 25–26 June 2026 for its M31 General Assembly, hosted by Technische Universität Wien (TU Wien). Partners reviewed the latest technical progress, discussed ongoing activities and upcoming milestones, and coordinated priorities for the following six months. The meeting supported continued alignment across the multidisciplinary research activities involved in developing EXFAN’s novel heat recuperation concept for fuel cell-powered aircraft propulsion.

Looking ahead, exFan will present its research at the 16th EASN International Conference, taking place in Toulouse, France, from 27–30 October 2026.

A dedicated exFan session, “Novel Rejected Heat-to-Thrust Recuperation System for Fuel Cell-Electric Aircraft,” will take place on 29 October, 11:00–13:00, in Lecture Hall 1. The session will present the project’s research on recovering rejected thermal energy and investigating its potential conversion into useful thrust, while providing an opportunity to exchange results and perspectives with the wider aviation research community. Stay updated on our participation at the conference through our LinkedIn page and also through the conference’s official agenda.
