The AREANA Project Concludes with Strong Legacy for Sustainable Partnership in Aviation Research
On December 4, 2025, the AREANA project officially concluded with a final meeting in Prague, celebrating years of collaboration dedicated to advancing sustainable partnership in aviation research in Europe and beyond. Consortium partners reviewed achievements, compared planned and actual outcomes, and reflected on dissemination efforts and lessons learned. The presentations highlighted major milestones and reinforced the value of coordinated European research in accelerating cleaner aviation solutions.
A day earlier, on December 3, the WP1 “Implementation and Growth Path Finalization Workshop” focused on shaping AREANA’s post-project continuity. Central to the discussion was the continued role of the AREANA Synergy MoU Group (ASMG), consisting of 7 Ministries and other funding entities from Austria, Germany, The Netherlands, Romania and the UK. In the meantime, ASMG has welcomed the CRIAQ funding program of the Canadian province of Quebec as a cooperation partner and will remain active and open to new members. Participants reviewed the open JoinED Call 2025/26, designed to strengthen international aviation research cooperation.
Key workshop discussions addressed strategy alignment, improved data-sharing frameworks, efficient twinning practices, and joint investment in research infrastructure. The AREANA Project Growth Plan outlined priorities to enhance participation, solutions, processes, and governance structures, aiming to better connect European, national, and regional funding ecosystems. Participants emphasized maximizing existing tools, improving operational efficiency, and stabilizing collaboration frameworks.
The workshop also introduced a forward-looking Synergy Vision centered on flagship initiatives and the shared “One Dream” theme, highlighting the importance of strong partnerships in sustaining progress.
A major legacy output is The Synergy Booklet: Advancing the European Aviation Research Ecosystem towards a Sustainable Future. The publication consolidates AREANA’s methodologies, cooperation models, and governance approaches to reduce fragmentation across aviation research programmes. It provides practical guidance for policymakers, funding bodies, researchers, and industry stakeholders, aligning with EU Green Deal and Fit for 55 objectives.
Although the project has formally ended, AREANA’s legacy continues through its frameworks, partnerships, and growth pathways. Together, they lay the groundwork for ongoing innovation and cooperation, supporting the transition toward a more sustainable future for aviation.
