Impact Monitor 2

The new website linking the two Impact Monitor initiatives is officially launched

The project has recently unveiled the new digital home of both the Impact Monitor and Impact Monitor 2 projects—now united under one umbrella to provide a seamless overview of our collective work on aviation impact assessment. Through this digital portal you may:

  • Explore how Impact Monitor laid the foundation for a holistic, science-based approach to assessing the environmental, economic, and societal impacts of aviation innovations.
  • Discover how Impact Monitor 2 is expanding this legacy—refining the digital collaborative framework, enhancing the toolbox, and applying them to real-world assessments of aviation R&I in Horizon Europe, Clean Aviation, and SESAR 3 initiatives.

Internal Workshops on key concepts for the IM2 Collaborative Framework development

After an insightful first workshop on "Model-Based Requirements Engineering: Theory and Introduction to ARMADE", the consortium gathered again for a second online workshop on "Trade-Space Exploration & Assessment – Theory and introduction to VALORISE", powered by DLR Institute of System Architectures in Aeronautics.

im2 Trade-Space Exploration & Assessment – Theory and introduction to VALORISEWhy does trade-space exploration matter? Determining the “best” solution isn’t straightforward when multiple stakeholders have different needs. The workshop focused on how to objectively evaluate and compare different configurations by:

  • Defining Attributes: Metrics that measure how well stakeholder needs are met
  • Assigning Weights: Prioritizing attributes based on stakeholder importance
  • Quantifying Expectations: Estimating the utility of each solution across attributes
  • Performing Assessments: Evaluating diverse solutions in the trade space
  • Estimating Value: Integrating weights and utilities into a single value for decision-making

VALORISE, the decision-support tool produced by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) that was introduced during the workshop, enables visualization of trade spaces, helping stakeholders and decision-makers navigate complex assessments and make informed, balanced choices.

Both workshops served as inspiration for a new series of articles, exploring key concepts behind the Impact Monitor 2 collaborative framework development. Read them now and delve into these two integral concepts that enable efficient collaboration and decision-making:

🔗 Model-based Requirements Engineering: A key instrument in building IM2’s Digital Collaborative Framework

🔗 Trade-space Exploration & Assessment: Determining the "best" solution when dealing with multiple stakeholders with various needs

Impact Monitor took the stage at the 15th EASN International Conference

As the aviation sector navigates its transition toward sustainability and competitiveness, the ability to assess the impacts of technologies, operations, and policies of aviation R&I is more critical than ever.

This year, IMPACT MONITOR Project 2 organized a special session at EASN2025, entitled "Holistic Impact Assessment in Aviation: Frameworks, Climate Metrics & Beyond", that presented valuable insights to explore the evolving landscape of aviation impact assessment—from climate metrics to integrated digital frameworks.

Chaired by the Impact Monitor 2 Project Coordinator, Prajwal Shivaprakasha (DLR Institute of System Architectures in Aeronautics), the session featured presentations from leading contributors from the Impact Monitor 2 and CLAIM projects:

The session concluded with a demonstration of the digital collaborative framework technologies, followed by an open discussion with the audience. The exchange explored key themes such as the scope of holistic assessment, the role of data standards and digital collaboration in enabling cross-organizational workflows, and the application of system-of-systems modelling to address the complexity inherent in comprehensive impact assessment studies.

The presentations are available on the Impact Monitor ZENODO Community and on the Impact Monitor 2 Website.
