Next-Generation Military Integrated Modular Avionics

The NG-MIMA (Next-Generation Military Integrated Modular Avionics) project addresses critical needs for the future of military avionics. The project’s scope focuses on:

  • Identifying new high-level architecture principles for multi-domain operations and security.
  • Pinpointing key technologies required for next-generation architecture solutions.
  • Enhancing data sharing and processing capabilities in military avionics systems, with a system-of-systems approach tailored to defense-related missions.

Our progress unfolds step by step as follows:

On March 18th, NG-MIMA was presented to representatives from the Ministries of Defence of participating Member States (Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, and Slovenia). The European Commission was represented by its Project Officer, Christophe Doin, who was briefed on the project’s main goals and implementation schedule.
Subsequently, industrial partner INDRA issued a press release, reflecting the project’s key messages and ambitions.

Our partner SAAB presented NG-MIMA during its Aviation Day, a key event that drew strong interest from stakeholders across the industry.

At IDET, PYROS, and ISET 2025 in Brno (Czech Republic, May 28–30), hundreds of industry experts, government officials, and members of the public had the opportunity to learn more about NG-MIMA’s goals. The exhibit, hosted by Honeywell Aerospace, highlighted its role in developing the next generation of European defense avionics.

As time passed, the NG-MIMA Project Management Team (PMT) and Executive Board met at Saab’s facilities in Linköping (June 10th) to align strategies and drive forward implementation.

This was followed by the launch of two major work packages, Safety-Critical Domain and Mission-Critical Domain, at a follow-up meeting on June 11th, further strengthening the path toward a more modular, interoperable, and resilient future for defense avionics. Closing the week the team successfully kicked off two additional work packages: Best Effort Mission Systems and Networking Technologies, adding momentum to NG-MIMA’s progress. Saab’s warm hospitality and spotless organization made these sessions a resounding success, strengthening collaboration and forward thinking.

Finally, an impressive video has been released, capturing NG-MIMA's general scope and its expected outcomes. Watch the video to learn more.
