Impact Monitor: Milestones Achieved and the Road Ahead
The IMPACT MONITOR project has officially concluded, marking a significant advancement in aviation impact assessment. By adopting a system-of-systems approach, the project has established a new benchmark for evaluating the environmental, economic, and societal impacts of aviation technologies, operations, and policies.
Over the past two years, the project has delivered key innovations, including:
- A collaborative digital framework integrating distributed impact assessment models
- A comprehensive toolbox guiding the entire impact assessment process
- Three multi-level demonstration use cases assessing aviation impact at aircraft, airport, and air transport system levels
- An interactive web-based dashboard for intuitive data visualization
- Mapping of key EU R&I projects and stakeholders to facilitate collaboration
- The Impact Monitor Academy, an educational initiative equipping students with practical skills in impact assessment
These outcomes are now available in the Project Legacy Pack: Explore the results
Insights from the Coordinators: What’s Next for Aviation Impact Assessment?
Impact assessment plays a pivotal role in ensuring the sustainable development of aviation. In a newly released Impact Monitor video, the project coordinators delve into:
- The importance of impact assessment in aviation
- Key challenges and achievements of Impact Monitor
- How the project is shaping the future of aviation research

Empowering Future Innovators: The Impact Monitor Academy
How do we prepare the next generation of aviation professionals to drive sustainable innovation? The Impact Monitor Academy has been instrumental in equipping students with hands-on experience in collaborative impact analysis, mentorship from industry leaders, and exposure to real-world aviation challenges.
Meet the students behind the Academy:
- Sara Vitale (University of Naples Federico II)
- Jannik Frank (University of Stuttgart)
- Philip Westphal (University of Stuttgart)
Their final research findings will be presented at the Impact Monitor Public Event on March 10, 2025, in Hamburg.
Final Project Meeting
The project’s results were presented at the final internal review meeting in Brussels on January 29, 2025, with participation from the Project Officer, executives from CINEA, the European Commission’s DG-RTD, and consortium partners. The discussions reinforced the project’s impact and the need for continued efforts in aviation sustainability.

Impact Monitor 2: The Next Chapter Begins
We are excited to announce the launch of Impact Monitor 2, building on the achievements of its predecessor. This second phase will enhance the collaborative framework and toolbox to support preliminary impact assessments of SMR and LR aircraft concepts, innovative operations, and aviation-related policies.

Following a virtual kickoff in February 2025, the project aims to become the go-to framework for evaluating environmental, climate, and competitiveness policy options in European aviation R&I and regulatory measures.
Impact Monitor Public Event: A Milestone Gathering
On March 10, 2025, the Impact Monitor consortium welcomed industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers to its Public Event in Hamburg, Germany, and online. Proudly hosted by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Institute of System Architectures in Aeronautics, the event showcased:
- Project achievements and demonstrations
- Technical workshops on impact assessment advancements
- Stakeholder discussions on future implementation and policy relevance
As we embark on the next phase with Impact Monitor 2, the journey towards a more sustainable, efficient, and data-driven approach to aviation impact assessment continues. Stay connected!
