The CONCERTO project is exploring novel certification methods and means of compliance for disruptive technologies. The project aims to develop a comprehensive set of regulations on certification, together with a preliminary description of Methods of Compliance (MoCs) applicable to the three "thrusts" of Clean Aviation (Hybrid electric regional aircraft, Ultra-efficient short and short- medium range aircraft, Disruptive technologies to enable hydrogen-powered aircraft). It will also assess the feasibility of a digital certification framework to support collaboration and model-based certification, while developing the novel Certification Readiness Level (CRL) scale to serve as a common certification framework, in close collaboration with the EASA.
CRL Scale
The novel Certification Readiness Level (CRL) scale -a core milestone of CONCERTO developed in partnership with EASA, has been officially introduced. The scale consists of nine main steps designed to assess the future certificability of innovative concepts of operation, business models, and products/systems. It complements the traditional Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale by engaging progressively with aviation authorities to facilitate future shared oversight activities. The CRL scale will be further detailed as part of the future certification methods and means of compliance under development within CONCERTO Project.
The scale is crucial for applicants, technology developers, and system suppliers working with EASA Innovation Services, such as Innovation Partnership Contracts (IPCs) or Pre-Application Services Contracts (PACs). Understanding and utilizing the CRL scale helps measure the maturity level of their products or Concepts of Operations (CONOPS).

The CRL scale has also been featured in CompositesWorld portal. Read the full article here.
Events
CONCERTO Project participated in the prestigious ILA Berlin 2024 Air Show, showcasing a core product of the Active Wing Proof of Concept -the EVA subscale model- at the Clean Aviation booth. The EVA demonstrator captivated visitors, providing them with in-depth insights into its innovative design and manufacturing processes.
Workshops & Meetings
May 2024: Workshop on Uncertainty quantification (UQ) methods
IRT Saint Exupéry along with AMADE - Universitat de Girona organized a workshop on Uncertainty Quantification methods within the framework of CONCERTO Project. Topics related to efficient uncertainty quantification and propagation methods within the ArianeGroup use case were discussed. In addition, visits to AMADE - Universitat de Girona and AMTEC composites lab facilities were organized.
July 2024: Workshop on H2 technologies
This workshop was held at the Clean Aviation premises, with the participation of all Clean Aviation projects related to H2 technologies and EASA. The primary goal of the workshop was to establish synergies between the different projects' activities and identify unaddressed gaps to further investigate possible contributions among the different projects.
Participating projects:
CAVENDISH | fLHYing tank | H2ELIOS | HyPoTraDe | NEWBORN | FASTER-H2 | HEAVEN | HYDEA | TROPHY | FAME
This meeting has been an excellent opportunity to discuss various technical proposals studied within Clean Aviation, share progress on the gap analysis related to different regulations (CS23, CS25, CSE, CS-36) and explore the learning needed to fill regulatory gaps.
July 2024: Workshop on H2 tank use case and Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) methods
Airbus organized in Hamburg a two-day meeting to discuss the future Means of Compliance (MoC) that will enable the certification of H2 composite tanks. The meeting has also been a good opportunity to review the role of uncertainty quantification for the validation of ArianeGroup and Airbus Netherlands B.V. use cases.
Meeting: HUCAN and CONCERTO: leveraging synergies to improve certification methods in aviation
Recently, a meeting on innovative approaches to certification methods has been held between CONCERTO Project, a Clean Aviation initiative, and HUCAN project, supported by SESAR Joint Undertaking. This meeting marks the beginning of a promising dialogue aimed at exploring potential synergies and collaboration opportunities between our two projects.
